GET CREATIVE WITH SMALL DINING SPACES

If the living room is the heart of the house then the dining room and kitchen are undoubtedly the soul of it. This is where food is prepared and served with love and care and thought for sustenance and the family must – no matter how busy they are -gather together whenever possible- to savor a delicious hot meal, swap stories, share joy as well as tough times and keep the family bond alive. Stories abound on the World Wide Web about how character building and nurturing those family meals were through generations.

Dedicated dining rooms are slowly becoming extinct owing to space constraints and our hectic lifestyles which leave no time for meals en famille -but we at Studio Marigold completely believe in them. You might not be able to set aside a whole room, but you may have carved out a dining zone in an open plan space, or even a little nook in the kitchen

Another reason we love dining spaces is because we get a chance to be extra creative and really think outside the box. Unlike more practical spaces like kitchens, there are really no restrictions – basically all you need in there is a table, seating and lighting. The rest is all about creating the right atmosphere, so it’s where we really get to flex our decorating style. To help you get started, here are some arrangements for small spaces where the dining rooms are cool and stylish and also cosy and intriguing ☺

PAIR A ROUND TABLE WITH A WALL SEATING ARRANGEMENT OR BANQUETTE

This classic combo is a highly efficient use of space. Together, they transform a bare corner into an elegant eating space. You can even use the space below the banquette for storage.

NOW YOU SEE IT NOW YOU DON’T!

A Folding dining table requires little more than a wall to be affixed to. To make a dining room appear magically simply fold out the table at mealtimes!! Et voila!

USE WALL SPACE

Often considered a design no-no in other rooms, placing furniture against the wall frees up space for walking in this narrow dining area. Folding chairs stored neatly on the opposite wall can easily be grabbed when company arrives.

CHOOSE DUAL PURPOSE FURNITURE

If you had to sacrifice part of your dining room to your workspace, get the best of both worlds with a pretty desk. For parties use as a buffet or extra seating

PRETTY UP OLD EXISTING FURNITURE TO CREAT A CHEERFUL DINING AREA

If your dining area consists of nothing more than a table and four chairs, work them hard to create a decorative scheme of their own. Give old wooden furniture a new lease of life by painting in shades of your choice. This grey and yellow combination brings a country feel to a table and chairs. Look for cutoffs of fabric and hem up so that you always have a pretty selection of tablecloths to hand – this floral turns the table into a very special place indeed when teamed with a display of fresh flowers.

BRING ON THE BENCH

Unlike chairs, a bench can seat more than one person (a handful of kids, if you’re lucky!) and can be used anywhere in the house for extra seating

USE A MIRROR TO MAGNIFY THE DINING SPACE

Old trick and works every time !

CREATE A BOOTH FOR FUN AND THE WOW FACTOR

This clever set-up makes room for an entire family in a tight corner — and offers hidden storage under the seats. Squeeze the largest table possible between the two benches and make the space special by hanging an oversized pendant light above.
